Sushmita Ghosh is a distinguished Indian classical Kathak dancer, teacher, and choreographer, known for her contributions to the art form both in India and internationally. Her journey in Kathak began at the age of eight at Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, where she received training from eminent gurus including Tirath Ram Azad of the Jaipur gharana, Reba Vidyarthi, and Munna Shukla of the Lucknow gharana. She was also profoundly influenced by the work of the late Kathak doyenne Rohini Bhate. Ghosh received a scholarship from the Ministry of Human Resources when she entered Kathak Kendra in 1979 at the age of fourteen. Ghosh has been an active figure in the Kathak scene for over two decades. In the late 1990s, she served as a Kathak teacher at The Bhavan in London. Her international engagement expanded in 1994 when she joined Akademi: South Asian Dance, UK, as its first training officer for Kathak. A significant achievement during this period was her design of the Akademi's first Kathak syllabus in 1996, which included a comprehensive manual for teachers. Returning to India in 2002, Sushmita Ghosh dedicated herself to evolving Kathak pedagogy, aiming to integrate traditional and contemporary teaching methodologies. She established the Aakriti Foundation, initially in Delhi and now based in Gurgaon, which she continues to lead. Through the Aakriti Foundation, she organizes an annual festival called “Tasmai,” which celebrates Indian classical music and dance and involves her students in various organizational aspects, fostering a deeper understanding of the art form's traditions. Ghosh continues to perform and teach, with a scheduled Kathak recital at The Bhavan in London in August 2026.
