Swapna Sundari is an acclaimed Indian classical dancer, choreographer, and vocalist, renowned for her mastery of Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam, and her pioneering revival of ancient temple dance traditions from Andhra Pradesh, particularly Vilasini Natyam. Born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, circa 1950, into a family deeply immersed in Carnatic music and arts, her maternal grandmother, C. Sundramma, a trained Carnatic singer, nurtured her early interest in performing arts. Sundari began her formal Bharatanatyam training at age five in Chennai under gurus including K. J. Govindarajan, K. N. Dakshinamoorthy, B. Kalyanasundaram, Adyar K. Lakshman, and Kalanidhi Narayanan. At age nine, after her family relocated to Visakhapatnam, she began training in Kuchipudi under Guru Pasumarthi Seetharamaiah. She furthered her Kuchipudi expertise with Vempati Chinna Satyam and Yeleswarapu Suryaprakash Sarma. Her professional performance career commenced in the 1970s, showcasing both Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam. Swapna Sundari has significantly influenced the preservation and evolution of Indian classical dance through her foundational role at the Kuchipudi Dance Centre in Delhi, where she serves as director and trains aspiring dancers in traditional Andhra forms such as Kuchipudi and Vilasini Natyam. She has conducted extensive research into the temple dance traditions indigenous to Andhra Pradesh, collaborating with Dr. Arudra to reconstruct and document the nearly lost Vilasini Natyam. Her scholarly work includes books like "Vilasini Natyam: Bharatam of Telugu Temple and Court Dancers." She is recognized for her virtuosic performances, blending precise nritta with emotive abhinaya, and her choreographic talents. Sundari is also the first contemporary dancer to perform annually in temple rituals, realigning Vilasini Natyam with its sacred origins.
