T. Chandrakanthamma was a distinguished Indian classical dancer, primarily recognized for her mastery of Bharatanatyam. Born in Tirumakudalu, in the erstwhile Mysore kingdom, she dedicated her life to the art form from a young age. Her rigorous training encompassed various facets of Bharatanatyam under eminent gurus. She received instruction in Natyam from Arani Appayya, while her Abhinaya skills were honed by Kashi Guru, a revered scholar at the Mysore court. For her musical foundation, she trained under B. Rachappa and pursued advanced studies with Tiruvarur Subramanya Iyer. Chandrakanthamma's exceptional talent led her to become a respected court dancer in the Mysore princely state, serving under Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV. Her performances, particularly her expressive Abhinaya in works like "Geetagovindam" and "Rajashekhara Vilasam," garnered significant acclaim from art connoisseurs. Her renditions of Sanskrit shlokas and javalis were also widely popular through sound recordings. Her profound contributions to Indian classical dance were recognized with prestigious awards, including the Karnataka Sangeeta Nataka Academy Award in 1964-65, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 1971, a testament to her lasting impact on the art form.
