Thottassery Chinnammu Amma (1900–1977) was a pivotal Indian classical dancer and teacher, widely recognized for her instrumental role in the revival and systematization of Mohiniyattam, the graceful dance form of Kerala. Born in 1900 in Pazhayannur, Thrissur district, Kerala, she received her early training in Mohiniyattam in Nair homes in the Palakkad region under the guidance of Parameshwara Bhagavathar. She became a disciple of the renowned Mohiniyattam guru Kalamozhi Krishna Menon, who was her primary teacher, and also studied under A. Krishna Panicker of Koratty and T. Narayanan Nair. Chinnammu Amma mastered the dance form at an early age, completing her studies by thirteen. In the early 20th century, Mohiniyattam faced a period of decline, almost on the verge of extinction. Her expertise proved vital in its reconstruction. In 1950, at the invitation of the esteemed poet Vallathol Narayana Menon, Chinnammu Amma joined Kerala Kalamandalam as a Mohiniyattam teacher. She played a crucial role in re-establishing the Mohiniyattam course, which had been discontinued due to a lack of teachers. Despite having stopped dancing after her marriage and having partially forgotten her repertoire, she diligently recollected and taught foundational elements, including adavus (basic steps), cholkettu, jatiswarams in ragas like Chenchurutti and Todi, and a Telugu varnam in Yadukulakamboji. Her instruction, often delivered in a maternal style, emphasized perseverance and laid the groundwork for systematizing the form, distinguishing it from other classical dances. She utilized the Carnatic style of music for her performances and teaching. Chinnammu Amma retired from Kerala Kalamandalam in 1963 or 1964. Her profound contributions to Mohiniyattam earned her the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (Fellowship) in 1972, making her the first-ever recipient of this national honor in Mohiniyattam. She is often referred to as the 'matriarch of Mohiniyattam' for her epochal contributions. Her teaching legacy is carried forward by her prominent disciples, including Kalamandalam Sathyabhama, Kalamandalam Chandrika, and Kalamandalam Kshemavathy.
