He received the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2018, recognizing his exceptional mastery and dedication to this traditional art form. Pattanayak is particularly known for his expertise in the Seraikella style of Chhau, which originates from Jharkhand, and has also played a vital role in preserving and promoting the Mayurbhanj Chhau style. He serves as a Director-Guru at the Government Chhau Dance Centre in Seraikella, Jharkhand, where he imparts his knowledge and trains new generations of dancers. His work underscores the rich martial, tribal, and folk origins of Chhau, characterized by its vigorous and expressive movements that often narrate mythological stories and folklore. Beyond performance and teaching, Guru Pattanayak has also contributed to the academic understanding of Chhau dance, notably as a co-author of the book "Chhau Dance: An Anthology."
