Tapati Chowdhurie is a revered figure in Indian classical dance, recognized as a performer, dance scholar, author, and respected critic. She began her dance journey at a young age, training under the legendary Guru Gopinath in Madras (now Chennai) from 1949-1950, starting at the tender age of seven or eight. By the age of ten, she was already performing Gitams and Puja dances, showcasing her early talent. A significant milestone in her performing career was in 1961 when she took on the lead role in Guru Gopinath's iconic production of Rabindranath Tagore's 'Natir Puja' in Madras, as part of the Tagore centenary celebrations. Chowdhurie also had a brief association with the International Centre for Kathakali in New Delhi. Over the years, Chowdhurie transitioned from a performer to a prominent voice in dance criticism, becoming one of India's most respected dance critics. Her four-decade-long career as a critic includes numerous interviews with dance legends such as Sanjukta Panigrahi and Kapila Vatsayan. She is also the author of 'Guru Gopinath: The Making of a Legend,' a work she considers her 'Guru Dakshina' and a definitive English-language account of her mentor. In her 80s, Tapati Chowdhurie made a remarkable return to the stage at the Ashitih Utsav in Mumbai, performing Guru Gopinath's timeless choreographies as a heartfelt tribute to his legacy. Her contributions to the performing arts were recognized with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Art Critique (Performing Arts) – Overall Contribution for the year 2024.
