Tara Chaudhri was a renowned exponent of Indian classical dance, often celebrated as the “Pavlova of Punjab” for her exceptional talent and versatility. Believed to have hailed from Lahore, she received extensive training across multiple classical dance forms. Her early education included Kathak under Pt. Pyare Lal of the Punjab Gharana and Ashiq Hussain of the Janaki Prasad Gharana, as well as Manipuri. Chaudhri furthered her studies in South India, mastering Kathakali at Kerala Kalamandalam and Bharatanatyam under the esteemed Guru Meenakshisundaram Pillai of the Pandanallur style, and also at the Tanjore School. In 1942, Tara Chaudhri established a dance school in Lahore, where she taught 'Bharata Natya'. She became the principal dance partner of the modernist dancer and choreographer Ram Gopal, embarking on extensive tours across India and Ceylon in 1946. Her performances were widely acclaimed for their grace, expressive movements, and her ability to infuse glamour into classical pieces, though her modernist approach sometimes drew criticism. For several years, Chaudhri made Madras her home, where she founded and maintained another dancing school, training students and developing new ballets based on traditional techniques. Her contributions extended to Indian cinema, with dance sequences in two Tamil films: 'Vedhala Ulagam' (1948), choreographed by Vazhuvoor Ramaiah Pillai, and 'Paarijatham' (1950). In 1954, she was a prominent member of the Indian Cultural Delegation that performed Bharatanatyam (including Alarippu, Thillana, and an abhinaya demonstration) and Kathak in the U.S.S.R., Poland, and Czechoslovakia. A visionary, Tara Chaudhri harbored an ambition to establish a Dance University in India, dedicated to the research and propagation of Indian classical and folk dancing. She passed away peacefully in Karachi, Pakistan, in September 2013.
