🪔 About
Thara Varma, a distinguished Kathakali dancer, began her journey in this traditionally male-dominated art form around 1971, at the age of nine. Born around 1962, she is recognized as one of the most gifted dancers in India. Varma played a pivotal role in breaking gender barriers in Kathakali, becoming a member of the pioneering Tripunithura Kathakali Kendram Ladies Troupe (also known as Tripunithura Vanitha Kathakali Sangham) in 1975. This all-women troupe was instrumental in creating a space for female Kathakali artists. She has performed alongside many distinguished Kathakali artists throughout her career. Varma faced challenges during her early career, including restrictions on women performing in temples during menstruation, which necessitated finding alternative venues for her passion. She even performed on stage while four months pregnant, showcasing her dedication to the art form. The Tripunithura Vanitha Kathakali Sangham, of which she is a member, was awarded the Nari Shakti Puraskar in 2017 for its significant contributions. Currently residing in Thane, Mumbai, Thara Varma continues to contribute to Kathakali through her Stage India Academy, where she conducts dance classes and organizes stage programs, fostering the next generation of dancers. She expressed immense happiness when Kerala Kalamandalam, a premier institution, began admitting girl students for Kathakali, a testament to the progress she championed.
