Thingbaijam Babu Singh was a distinguished Indian classical dancer, academic, and choreographer, widely recognized for his profound contributions to the Manipuri dance form. Born on February 8, 1936, in Lairensajik, a village in Manipur, India, he emerged as a pivotal figure in preserving and propagating the rich traditions of Manipuri dance. He specialized particularly in the Pung and Raas traditions of Manipuri dance. His expertise led him to serve as the Pradhan Guru (chief instructor) of these traditions at the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA), which operates under the Sangeet Natak Akademi. Through his extensive career, Thingbaijam Babu Singh became known as a notable choreographer and teacher, influencing a generation of dancers. He also contributed to the academic understanding of Manipuri dance by authoring the book "Meitei Punglon Raga Ahouba" and "Ras Purnima" in Manipuri, published in 1983 by Sangeet Natak Akademi.
