Thangachi Ammal was a significant figure in the early 20th-century landscape of Bharatanatyam, particularly renowned for her association with the Pandanallur style. She belonged to the ancestral dance caste of devadasis, who were the traditional custodians and practitioners of this classical art form. Ammal was a direct disciple of the legendary Guru Meenakshisundaram Pillai (1869–1964), who is widely recognized as the 'Father of Bharatanatyam' and the progenitor of the distinct Pandanallur style. Her training under Meenakshisundaram Pillai placed her among an elite group of dancers, including other prominent devadasis like Pandanallur Jayalakshmi and Sabaranjitam, as well as non-hereditary students such as Mrinalini Sarabhai, Rukmini Devi, and Tara Chaudhri. Thangachi Ammal was notably considered the "best early dancer" to have been trained by Meenakshisundaram Pillai, indicating her exceptional talent and mastery of the Pandanallur idiom.
