Tripura Kashyap is a pioneering figure in Indian movement arts, renowned for her groundbreaking work in Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) in India. She received a first-class diploma in Bharatanatyam from the esteemed Kalakshetra in Chennai and was a performing artist with the Chandralekha dance company for many years, where she explored the nuances of bringing contemporary elements into classical dance. Her early exposure to dance was partly to rectify a squint, which she credits Bharatanatyam with resolving. Kashyap pioneered Dance Movement Therapy in India in 1990, following specialized training at the Hancock Centre for Creative Arts Therapies in Wisconsin, USA. She holds a B.A. in English Literature and an M.A. in Psychology, which further informed her therapeutic approach. Her diverse dance training also includes Jazz, Ballet, Modern dance, Choreography, and Dance theatre at the American Dance Festival, USA. Throughout her career spanning over three decades, Tripura Kashyap has worked as a Dance Movement therapist in various settings, including halfway homes, educational centers, rehabilitation centers, and with individual clients. She co-founded the Creative Movement Therapy Association of India (CMTAI) and has been instrumental in developing and teaching DMT certificate, PG Diploma, and M.A. courses across India. She also served as founder-director of Rainbow Inc in Hyderabad and Apoorva Dance Theatre in Bengaluru, and has collaborated on numerous cross-art projects with filmmakers, visual artists, and musicians. Kashyap is the author of 'My Body, My Wisdom,' a book on dance therapy, and 'Contemporary Dance: Practices, Paradigms and Practitioners'.
