Dr. Utpal K. Banerjee (September 29, 1935 – December 22, 2025) was a distinguished Indian scholar, author, and commentator renowned for his profound contributions to the understanding and documentation of Indian performing arts, particularly classical dance. After earning an honours degree in Pure Physics from the University of Calcutta in 1955 and a Ph.D. from the University of Manchester in 1972 as a Commonwealth Scholar, Dr. Banerjee initially pursued a career in management and information technology. He held significant positions in various Government of India agencies and the corporate sector, including Chief of Management Services at Tata Steel and Director General of the All India Management Association. He also served as a visiting faculty for management studies at institutions like Jawaharlal Nehru University and the International Management Institute. Over four decades, Dr. Banerjee emerged as a leading scholar-commentator on Indian art and culture. He authored 23 books on Indian art and culture and 10 on Tagore studies, with notable works focusing on classical dance including "Celebration of Indian Classical Dance," "Exquisiteness of Indian Classical Dance (Rasa and Bhava)," and "Exuberance of Indian Classical Dance." His formal exposure to visual and performing arts began with courses at the University of Manchester. He was the National Project Director for the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) for a UNDP project on multimedia database for art and culture documentation from 1990-1992. He lectured on Indian art and culture for the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) in Canada and South America and was a regular contributor to London BBC, All India Radio, and Indian television. He also penned "The Eastern Eye" column for Narthaki.com, a prominent dance portal. For his extensive work, Dr. Banerjee was honored with the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award, in 2009 for his contributions to Literature and Education. He also received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2018 for his Contribution / Scholarship in Performing Arts. In 2022, he co-founded and became the President of the Utpal Sampa Kala Kendra, a cultural research centre dedicated to preserving India's cultural heritage, named in part after his close artistic companion, renowned puppeteer Sampa Ghosh.
