Vadivelu Pillai (c. 1810 – 1845) was the youngest and one of the most exceptionally gifted members of the illustrious Tanjore Quartet, a group of four brothers (Chinnayya, Ponnayya, Sivanandam, and Vadivelu) who profoundly shaped Indian classical dance and Carnatic music. Born in Thanjavur, India, he, along with his brothers, received extensive musical training from Muthuswami Dikshitar, one of the revered Carnatic music trinity. Dikshitar recognized Vadivelu's exceptional talent, calling him an "ekasandhagrahi," meaning he could reproduce a song after hearing it just once. Initially serving in the court of Maratha King Serfoji II in Thanjavur, Vadivelu later moved to Travancore (present-day Thiruvananthapuram) where he was appointed court musician by Maharaja Swati Tirunal. He is widely credited with popularizing the violin in Carnatic music, having learned the instrument from a European missionary named Schwartz. In recognition of his contributions, Maharaja Swati Tirunal gifted him a rare ivory violin in 1834. Beyond his musical prowess, Vadivelu and the Tanjore Quartet were instrumental in systematizing Bharatanatyam, codifying its basic steps (adavus) and establishing the "Margam," the structured performance repertoire from Alarippu to Tillana, which remains the standard format today. Vadivelu also played a crucial role in elaborating and refining Mohiniattam, a classical dance form, thereby creating opportunities for women dancers in Kerala, where Kathakali, a male-dominated form, was previously prevalent. A scholar in Tamil and Telugu, he was a distinguished vocalist, violinist, composer, and Bharatanatyam exponent, composing numerous varnams and kritis, some in collaboration with Maharaja Swati Tirunal. He passed away at the young age of 37.
