Vandita Parikh is a distinguished Indian classical and folk dancer, teacher, and choreographer, widely recognized for her contributions to preserving and promoting Indian folk arts. Her dance journey commenced at the age of four, leading her to rigorous Bharatanatyam training at the prestigious Kalakshetra Dance Academy in Chennai, under the tutelage of Mrs. Nirmala Sharma and Smt. Krishnaveni Akka. At 16, she discovered her calling in Indian folk arts, further honing her skills through advanced workshops at the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts in Ahmedabad with Guru Mallika Sarabhai, and training with mentors such as Gopi Master, Madhumati Barman, and Smt. Vasantha Aravindan. Parikh began her teaching career in 1989 at GoodShepherds high school in Chennai. In 1994, she founded the Nruthya Shakti Dance Academy (NSDA) in Chennai, an institution dedicated to Indian folk dance, theatre, and theory. Expanding her reach, she moved to Dallas, Texas, in 2000, and subsequently established NSDA branches in Plano, Frisco, and Irving by 2003. Her dedication to Indian folk dance has garnered global acclaim, including the President's Award in 2011 from Smt. Pratibha Patil for her efforts in promoting folk art and culture. She has taught Indian folk dance at the Booker T. Washington School for Performing Arts, presented folk theory and dance forms at Stanford University, and conducted workshops at various universities, including the University of Texas at Dallas and Oklahoma State University. Through NSDA, Parikh emphasizes cultural immersion, tailored progression, and a blend of theory and practice, fostering a deep appreciation for India's rich cultural heritage.
