Dr. Vasumathi Badrinathan is an eminent Indian classical artist, recognized as both a Carnatic vocalist and a Bharatanatyam dancer. Born into a family with a strong musical background, she was initiated into Carnatic music at a very young age by her mother, the late Smt. Padma Seshadri, who was also her first guru. She subsequently received training in Carnatic music from the renowned guru, the late Smt. T. R. Balamani. For Bharatanatyam, Vasumathi Badrinathan was groomed by the stalwart Kalaimamani Guru T.K. Mahalingam Pillai of Sri Rajarajeswari Bharata Natya Kala Mandir, Mumbai. Vasumathi Badrinathan is a performing artist of rare sensitivity and versatility, known for combining tradition with creativity in her singing style. She has performed both dance and music extensively in India and has toured widely in Europe, Asia Pacific, and African countries, presenting vocal concerts, lecture-demonstrations, and workshops. She is a graded artist of All India Radio and an empanelled artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). An academician with a PhD in French, she is fluent in multiple languages including English, French, Tamil, Hindi, Marathi, and Gujarati. She is also a prolific writer, contributing articles on music and dance to national and international publications like the Indian Express and The Asian Age. Her research work includes topics such as Divya Prabandham poetry, Music of the Mystics, and Spirituality in Indian music.
