Vechoor Thankamony Pillai was a revered figure in Indian classical dance, specifically recognized as a master of Thullal, a traditional dance-theatre form originating from Kerala, India. He also enriched Kurathiyattam, another folk art of Kerala. Born in a family where his father, N. Madhavan Pillai, taught him Sanskrit, Thankamony Pillai's journey into Thullal began as a young boy, captivated by performances at the local Subrahmanya shrine festival. He received his intensive training from the renowned performer Parippu Kuttan Menon (also known as Shri Kuttan Merton of Parippu village near Kottayam). Under his guru's tutelage, Thankamony Pillai mastered all three principal styles of Thullal: Ottan, Parayan, and Seethangan. By his late teenage years, he was proficient in approximately 25 stories across these Thullal varieties. His career saw him performing extensively at temple festivals throughout Kerala, where his song-and-dance Thullal performances were known for their mythological themes interwoven with sharp satire on contemporary society. He was celebrated as "quite a star" at the Poornathrayeesa festival in Tripunithura, with his mudras described as "charmingly raw." Thankamony Pillai's significant contributions to the art form were nationally recognized when he became the first, and at the time of a 2021 article, the only Thullal practitioner to receive the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 1995. He had previously been honored with the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi award in 1980. A year before his passing, he was also awarded the Kunchan Nambiar Memorial Prize, a significant accolade named after the progenitor of Thullal. His teaching legacy includes students like Kalamandalam Prabhakaran, who learned the nuances of Parayan Thullal from him in the 1980s.
