Vedantam Satyanarayana Sarma (1935–2012), popularly known as Satyam, was a legendary Indian classical dancer and choreographer, widely regarded as one of the foremost exponents of the Kuchipudi dance form. Born on September 9, 1935, in Kuchipudi village, Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh, into the Vedantam family known for its rich Kuchipudi tradition, he began his training at the tender age of five under his elder brother, Vedantam Prahalada Sarma. He further honed his skills under renowned gurus Vedantam Lakshminarayana Sastri and Chinta Krishnamurthy. Additionally, he received classical music training from Yeleswarapu Seetharamanjaneyulu and Sishta Brahmaiah Sastry, essential for Kuchipudi's dance-drama format, Bhagawata Melam, which requires performers to sing. Sarma made his debut at the age of fourteen, performing in the melams 'Harischandra' and 'Ramanatakam'. He became particularly celebrated for his masterful portrayal of female characters, a tradition in early Kuchipudi, performing in over 10,000 stages throughout his six-decade career. His signature role was Satyabhama in 'Bhama Kalapam', and he was also acclaimed for his depictions of Usha (Usha Parinayam), Deva Devi (Vipra Narayana), Mohini (Mohini Rukmangada), Sasirekha (Sasirekha Parinayam), and Gollabhama (Gollakalapam). He also appeared as Manmadha in the Telugu film 'Rahasyam' in 1967. Beyond performing, Sarma was a dedicated teacher and scholar. He was actively involved in teaching at Venkatarama Natya Mandali in his native village and served as President of the institution since 1969. He also held the position of Principal at Siddhendra Kalakshetra, Kuchipudi, from 1969 to 1974. He authored several texts on dance, including 'Natya Shastra', 'Abhinaya Darpanam', 'Tandava Lakshanam', and 'Alankara Shastram'. His life and artistry have been documented in the film 'I am Satyabhama'. Vedantam Satyanarayana Sarma passed away on November 16, 2012, at the age of 77, in Vijayawada.
