Vedantam Venkata Naga Chalapathi Rao is a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, renowned for his mastery of Kuchipudi. Hailing from the illustrious Vedantam family of Kuchipudi, known for its 'Natya Parampara' (dance inheritance), he was initiated into dance at the tender age of five by his father, the esteemed teacher-dancer Vedantam Rattayya Sarma. His training was further honed under his paternal uncle Vedantam Radheshyam, and later under the legendary guru Vempati Chinna Satyam in Chennai. Chalapathi Rao is celebrated for his unique ability to perform 'roopanuroopa prakriya', portraying both female and male roles in the same program with remarkable ease and precision. He has mastered traditional female impersonation (Stri Vesham), notably as Sathyabhama in Bhama Kalapam, and is equally compelling in masculine roles such as Hiranyakashipa in Bhakta Prahalada ballet and Bali Chakravarthy in Ksheerasagara Madanam. Academically accomplished, he holds a Post Graduate degree in dance and is a gold medal research scholar from Potti Sriramulu Telugu University, bringing a scholarly dimension to his artistry. He has performed extensively at prestigious dance festivals across India, including Khajuraho, Ananya, and Siddhendra Yogi Festivals, and has graced international stages in the United States (with Vempati's troupe and solo), China, and Japan (as a nattuvannar on an ICCR sponsored tour). Dr. Vedantam Venkata Naga Chalapathi Rao is the founder of the Kuchipudi Heritage Arts Society and serves as its Secretary, dedicated to preserving and promoting the purity of the Kuchipudi tradition.
