Vellinezhi Achuthan Kutty is an Indian scientist, theatre scholar, and author renowned for his significant contributions to Kathakali literature and promotion. Hailing from Chunagad near Ottapalm in Kerala, he pursued higher education, earning post-graduation degrees in physics and psychology, and a diploma in traditional architecture and data processing. His professional career included service at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and the Department of Meteorology until 2001. Achuthan Kutty's deep engagement with Kathakali is evident through his acclaimed literary works, "Kathakaliyudae Kaipusthakam (A Handbook of Kathakali)," published in 2013, and "Kathakalipadangal (Verses of Kathakali)," with its third edition released in 2022. These books are considered comprehensive reference guides to Kathakali's history, techniques, and artists. He was also a disciple of the Kathakali musician Tirur Nambissan for a short period. Achuthan Kutty is an influential figure in the cultural landscape of Kerala, serving as the director of Tantra Academy (Tantra Academy of Behavioural and Allied Sciences), president of Vellinezhi Nanunair Smaraka Kalakendram, and chief coordinator of Vellinezhi Kalagramam, an initiative he helped establish to promote the arts. His dedication to the art form was recognized with the prestigious Kerala Kalamandalam Award in 2013.
