Vempadappa Lakshmi is an emerging Kuchipudi dancer and teacher from India. She grew up facing societal discrimination and her parents struggled as domestic workers. Her exceptional talent in Kuchipudi was discovered in 2009 by Guru Sandhya Raju, who selected her from 150 applicants and offered her a scholarship with the prestigious Nishrinkala Dance Academy. Despite facing challenges, including juggling school, beautician courses, and a long 5 km walk to dance class, Lakshmi's unwavering determination allowed her to develop into a remarkable performer. Today, she works as a freelance dancer and a full-time teacher at Nishrinkala Dance Academy, also extending her expertise to international students through online classes. A significant milestone in her career was her "Swathantra Pravesham" event in July 2023, introduced by the Nishrinkala Dance Academy. This ceremony marks the moment a seasoned student emerges from their Guru's guidance to establish themselves as a financially independent and creative artist in Kuchipudi, encouraging them to explore performances, choreography, teaching, innovation, and artistic individuality while maintaining ties with their Guru and institute. Lakshmi is also dedicated to teaching Kuchipudi to underprivileged children in her neighborhood, showcasing her commitment to giving back to the community.
