Dr. Vedantam Venkata Naga Chalapathi Rao is a distinguished figure in Kuchipudi, an Indian classical dance form, hailing from the renowned Vedantam family of Kuchipudi, known for its rich 'Natya Parampara' or dance inheritance. He began his dance training at the tender age of five, initiated by his father, the esteemed Guru Vedantam Rattayya Sarma. His artistic development was further shaped by legendary gurus such as Vempati Chinna Satyam, Vedantam Satyanarayana Sarma, and his paternal uncles Vedantam Raghavayya and Vedantam Radhesyam. A versatile performer, Chalapathi Rao has mastered the traditional female impersonation (Stri Vesham) of Kuchipudi natyam, earning accolades from gurus and scholars alike. He is equally adept at portraying powerful masculine roles, notably 'Hiranyakashipu' in the Bhakta Prahalada ballet and 'Bali Chakravarthy' in Ksheerasagara Madanam. Academically accomplished, he holds a Post Graduate degree in dance and is a gold medal research scholar from Potti Sriramulu Telugu University, bringing a scholarly dimension to his artistic practice. His extensive performance career includes appearances at prestigious festivals across India, such as the Khajuraho Dance Festival, Ananya Dance Festival, and the Siddhendra Yogi Festivals. Internationally, he has toured the US with Vempati Chinna Satyam's troupe, performing in over 70 shows, and has also performed in China and Japan with ICCR. Dr. Chalapathi Rao is the Secretary of the Kuchipudi Heritage Arts Society and is associated with Kuchipudi Kalaniketan. He was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi's "Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar" in 2006, recognizing his significant contributions to Kuchipudi. He also conceptualized the Kuchipudi Natyapathaka Swarnotsavulu in Kuchipudi village to celebrate 50 years of the Kuchipudi flag.
