Kalamandalam Venmani Haridas (born September 15, 1946 – died September 17, 2005) was a distinguished Indian Kathakali musician, celebrated for his evocative renditions of Kathakali padams, the playback songs integral to Kerala's classical dance-drama tradition. Born Haridas at Venmani Mana, a Namboodiri household with a rich literary background in Vellarappilly village near Aluva, Kochi, he was the son of Venmani Narayanan Nampoothiripad and Devasena Antharjanam. His early fascination with Kathakali was sparked by observing performances staged at the nearby Akavoor Mana. Haridas received his initial music training under Mundakkal Sankara Varrier and subsequently delved into Kathakali padams from narratives such as Rukmini Swayamvaram and Kuchela Vritham. In 1960, he enrolled at Kerala Kalamandalam, where he honed his musical skills under eminent Kathakali musicians including Kalamandalam Neelakantan Nambisan, Sivaraman Nair, and Kalamandalam Gangadharan Nair, notably becoming Gangadharan's first student when the latter joined the institution as a teacher. Upon completing his studies at Kalamandalam in 1968, Haridas joined Darpana, a renowned performing arts institute established by danseuse Mrinalini Sarabhai in Ahmedabad, as a music teacher. This period exposed him to various North Indian musical styles, including classical Hindustani music, which later influenced his innovative approach to Kathakali singing. A decade later, in 1978, he returned to his home state, taking up a position as a music teacher at Margi in Thiruvananthapuram, where he dedicated three decades of his career. Known for his melodious voice and clear enunciation, Haridas skillfully integrated the microtone-rich voice culture of Carnatic music into the emotion-laden Sopanam style of Kathakali music. He began his stage career as an accompanist (shinkiti) under Kalamandalam Sankaran Embranthiri before rising to prominence as an eminent lead singer, often collaborating with colleagues like Kalamandalam Hyderali. He was a favored vocal accompanist for Kathakali masters such as Kalamandalam Gopi, Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair, Kottakkal Sivaraman, and Kalamandalam Vasu Pisharody. Haridas passed away on September 17, 2005, at the age of 59, due to a liver ailment.
