Kalamandalam Venmani Haridas (September 15, 1946 – September 17, 2005), more popularly known as Venmani Haridas, was a renowned Indian Kathakali musician, celebrated for his evocative rendition of Kathakali padams, the playback songs integral to the classical dance-drama tradition of Kerala. Born into the Namboodiri household of Venmani Mana in Vellarappilly village near Aluva, Kochi, Haridas developed an early interest in Kathakali by observing performances at the nearby Akavoor Mana. He received his initial music training from Mundakkal Sankara Varrier and further honed his skills in Kathakali padams, learning from stories such as Rukmini Swayamvaram and Kuchela Vritham. In 1960, he joined the prestigious Kerala Kalamandalam, where he studied music under leading Kathakali musicians including Kalamandalam Neelakantan Nambisan, Sivaraman Nair, and Kalamandalam Gangadharan. Notably, he was the first student of Kalamandalam Gangadharan when the latter began teaching at the institution. After completing his studies at Kalamandalam, Haridas joined Darpana, a prominent performing arts institute founded by danseuse Mrinalini Sarabhai in Ahmedabad, in 1968, serving as a music teacher. This period exposed him to various North Indian musical styles, including classical Hindustani music, which influenced his innovative approach to Kathakali singing. A decade later, in 1978, Haridas returned to his home state and accepted a position as a Kathakali music teacher at Margi in Thiruvananthapuram, where he dedicated three decades of his career. Haridas initially performed as an accompanist singer (shinkiti), notably under the guidance of Kalamandalam Sankaran Embranthiri. His melodious voice, clear enunciation of lyrics, and ability to convey profound emotions soon propelled him to become an eminent lead singer (Ponnani). He masterfully blended the traditional emotion-laden Sopanam style of Kathakali music with the microtone-rich voice culture of Carnatic music. He formed a significant creative partnership with Kalamandalam Sankaran Embranthiri and Kalamandalam Hyderali, a trio that profoundly influenced Kathakali music for several decades. Beyond his musical contributions, Haridas also ventured into acting, appearing in two Malayalam feature films directed by Shaji N. Karun: *Swaham* (1994) and *Vanaprastham* (1999). His life and musical journey are documented in the biography "Bhava Gayakan" by Dr. N.P. Vijayakrishnan and the 2012 documentary film "Chitharanjini: Remembering the Maestro." Haridas passed away on September 17, 2005, in Thiruvananthapuram.
