Verushka Pather

Verushka Pather is a celebrated Indian classical dancer and a foremost exponent of Bharatanatyam from South Africa. Born in Malabar, Port Elizabeth, she was raised in a traditional Hindu community and developed a passion for dance at a young age, beginning her training at a local dance school at five years old after being inspired by a performance by Kalakshetra dancers. After matriculating from Malabar High School in 1994, Pather pursued her dream of studying dance in India. She received a fellowship from the Indian government, specifically the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), in 1996, becoming the first South African to receive such a scholarship. Pather trained for five years with the distinguished Dhananjayans at Bharata Kalanjali in Chennai, India, and had her arangetram (debut performance) in 1998. Upon returning to South Africa, Pather initially worked as an occupational therapist before dedicating herself fully to dance and establishing her own institution, the Natya Anand Temple of Fine Art, where she serves as artistic director. She is recognized as an internationally acclaimed performer and teacher, highly respected for her dedication to Bharatanatyam within the South African context. Pather has performed globally, including at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam for the Brahmotsavam, and has organized temple dance tours in South India to revive the tradition of dancing in temple courtyards. She has also collaborated with other classical artists, such as Manesh Maharaj, to create fusion works combining Bharatanatyam with Kathak. In February 2026, she is slated to be honored by the Ministry of Culture in Tamil Nadu for her significant contributions to Indian arts and culture on the African continent.
