🪔 About
Vibha Selvaratnam is a distinguished British Tamil Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, and teacher, whose parents originate from Sri Lanka. She commenced her rigorous training in Bharatanatyam at a very early age under the guidance of her mother, Kiran Ratna, an established figure in Indian classical dance within the United Kingdom. Selvaratnam marked her formal debut with her Arangetram in 2008. Her comprehensive dance education also includes intensive short-term training from several eminent gurus, notably Chitraleka Bolar, Praveen Kumar, and the renowned Dhananjayans. Demonstrating a broad artistic range, she has also attained ISTD grades in Classical Ballet. Beyond her artistic pursuits, Vibha Selvaratnam is academically accomplished, holding a Masters in Mathematics from Oxford University. She skillfully balances her demanding dance career with her professional role as a research scientist. Recognized as one of the top young dancers in the UK, her captivating solo dance recitals and extensive tours across both India (including cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, and Trivandrum) and the UK have significantly elevated her profile on the international dance circuit. Her innovative productions, such as "Navarasa" and "Nayika," have been instrumental in fostering greater interest and appreciation for Bharatanatyam in the regions where she performs. Since 2014, Vibha Selvaratnam has been at the helm of India Dance South West, an institution based in Exeter, United Kingdom. This organization is dedicated to the promotion, development, and enjoyment of Bharatanatyam, making the classical art form accessible and inspiring to a wider audience. As a committed educator, she leads regular classes in Exeter and Plymouth, where her students consistently achieve a remarkable 100% pass rate in their ISTD dance examinations. Selvaratnam's dedication extends to actively performing, choreographing new works, and teaching, thereby contributing significantly to both the artistic evolution and pedagogical legacy of Bharatanatyam. She is also involved with India Dance BN, a continuation of India Dance Wales, which was Wales' premier professional Indian dance company since 1983, now co-led by her and Kiran Ratna in England.
