Guru Vikram Singh was a significant figure in Indian classical dance, particularly known for his contributions to Kathak. Originally from Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), he journeyed to Lucknow, India, where he immersed himself in the art form and became a disciple of the esteemed Achhan Maharaj. His dedication led him to become a renowned practitioner and teacher of Kathak, deeply influenced by the Lucknow gharana. Vikram Singh is credited with initiating several notable dancers into the world of Kathak. Among his prominent students was Guru Pali Chandra, whom he introduced to the mesmerizing art form. He also played a crucial role in her early training, laying the foundational roots of classical dance in her. Furthermore, he introduced Pali Chandra to Kapila Raj, another significant figure in the Lucknow Kathak circle, for further grooming in abhinaya and rasa theory. Another notable student was Gina Lalli, an American dancer who studied Kathak in Lucknow in the early 1960s under Guru Vikram Singh. His influence extended to researchers and scholars as well. Dr. Sunil Kothari, a renowned dance historian, stayed with Vikram Singh in Lucknow in 1978 during his research for a definitive book on Kathak. Kothari referred to him as a "renowned dancer from Sri Lanka" and a disciple of Achhan Maharaj, highlighting his standing in the Kathak community. Vikram Singh's commitment to Kathak and his teaching legacy have left a lasting impact on the dance form through his disciples.
