Kalamandalam Vimala Menon, born on January 7, 1942, in Irinjalakuda, Thrissur district, Kerala, India, is a distinguished Indian classical dance teacher and a leading exponent of Mohiniyattam. Her parents were S. K. Krishnan Nair and Vishalakshy Amma. Vimala Menon began her initial dance training under Thripunithura Vijaya Bhanu and also received Carnatic music lessons from M. R. Madhusudhana Menon. In 1960, she enrolled in Kerala Kalamandalam, where she pursued a four-year diploma in dance, specializing in both Mohiniyattam and Bharatanatyam. During her time at Kalamandalam, she was mentored by eminent gurus such as Thottassery Chinnammu Amma and Kalamandalam Satyabhama for Mohiniyattam, and Thanjavoor Bhaskara Rao for Bharatanatyam. Menon's career as a performer and teacher commenced with her role as a dance instructor at the Jawahar School under Neyveli Lignite Corporation. Following her marriage to Viswanatha Menon in 1966, she moved to Bhutan, where she continued to teach and perform South Indian classical dances. A pivotal moment in her career was the establishment of the Kerala Natya Academy in Thiruvananthapuram in 1972, an institution dedicated to nurturing and propagating Indian classical dance forms, including Mohiniyattam, Bharatanatyam, and Kuchipudi. Kalamandalam Vimala Menon is widely recognized for her significant contributions to the evolution and popularization of Mohiniyattam. She is credited with being the vision and stimulus behind the contemporary aesthetic, costume, hairdo, instrumentalization, and presentation patterns of Mohiniyattam. She introduced notable changes to the costume and presentation of the dance form, which have since become widely accepted standards. Furthermore, she pioneered the introduction of Kuchipudi in Kerala and transformed Mohiniyattam from a solo art into a group performance, even incorporating male roles. Over her extensive career spanning more than six decades, she has trained over 10,000 students across five generations, with her daughter, Vinduja Menon, also becoming a classical dancer and film actress.
