Mungara Yamini Krishnamurthy (1940-2024) was an iconic Indian classical dancer, celebrated for her profound contributions to Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, and Odissi. Born on December 20, 1940, in Madanapalli, Andhra Pradesh, she began her dance journey at the tender age of five at the renowned Kalakshetra School of Dance in Madras (now Chennai) under the tutelage of Bharatanatyam danseuse Rukmini Devi Arundale. After her foundational training, she further honed her Bharatanatyam skills under esteemed gurus such as Kanchipuram Ellappa Pillai, Kittappa Pillai, Dhandayuthapani Pillai, and Mylapore Gowri Ammal. Krishnamurthy made her Bharatanatyam debut in Madras in 1957, quickly rising to prominence in India's dance scene. She expanded her repertoire to include Kuchipudi, studying under illustrious gurus like Vedantam Lakshmi Narayana Shastri, Chinta Krishnamurthi, and Pasumarthy Venugopal Krishna Sharma, and later learned Odissi from Pankaj Charan Das and Kelucharan Mohapatra. She was also trained in Carnatic vocal music and the veena. Yamini Krishnamurthy played a pivotal role in popularizing Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi, especially in North India after relocating to Delhi in the 1960s. She was known for her dynamic stage presence and for redefining Bharatanatyam by increasing the speed of jatis. In 1990, she established her own dance training institute, the Yamini School of Dance, in Hauz Khas, New Delhi, where she continued to teach and mentor numerous students. Her illustrious career was marked by numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri (1968), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1977), Padma Bhushan (2001), and Padma Vibhushan (2016), among India's highest civilian honors. She was also bestowed the title of Asthana Nartaki (Resident Dancer) by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam. Krishnamurthy authored her autobiography, "A Passion for Dance," in 1995. She passed away on August 3, 2024, in New Delhi, leaving behind a profound legacy in Indian classical dance.
