🪔 About
Yudhisthir Nayak is a highly regarded Indian classical dancer and guru, primarily recognized for his contributions to Odissi dance. Born into a family deeply rooted in performing arts, with his grandfather owning a Gotipua dance troupe and his father, Jayakrushna Nayak, being a renowned singer and music composer for Gotipua dance, Nayak's journey into dance began at an early age. He was initiated into Gotipua dance at seven and continued training in this traditional form until he was twelve years old. At the age of fifteen, Yudhisthir Nayak transitioned to Odissi, receiving his initial training under Guru Bichitrananda Swain, with the direct supervision of Guru Gangadhar Pradhan, the founder of the esteemed Orissa Dance Academy in Bhubaneswar. He further honed his skills under the guidance of Smt. Aruna Mohanty and Shri Manoranjan Pradhan. Nayak is a versatile artist, having also trained in Odissi vocal music, Odissi Mardala (percussion), and the martial dance form of Chhau from Mayurbhanj. This comprehensive training has made him a well-rounded Odissi artist, known for his powerful and expressive performances characterized by supple body postures, graceful movements, and varied facial expressions. Throughout his career, Yudhisthir Nayak has performed extensively both in India and internationally, captivating audiences in countries such as the USA, Canada, Germany, Italy, UK, Slovakia, Croatia, Serbia, and Singapore. He has served as a senior teacher at the Orissa Dance Academy in Bhubaneswar and has been instrumental in propagating Odissi abroad. Notably, he was a teacher-in-residence at the Center for World Music in San Diego, California, from 2005 to 2007, and has also taught Odissi dance and music in Houston. His dedication to teaching led him to train numerous students, with many becoming accomplished solo performers. Nayak has also ventured into choreography, with his dance drama "Ahalya" being staged at the Konark Dance and Music Festival. His international experience includes working with American pop singer Ricky Martin and choreographing for a Hollywood movie.
