Zhang Jiayuan, also known as Rhea, is a Chinese Bharatanatyam dancer who achieved the milestone of performing her Arangetram, a solo debut in the ancient Indian dance form, in Beijing in August 2025. She was 17 years old at the time and became the second Chinese student to perform an Arangetram. Zhang Jiayuan began learning Bharatanatyam at the age of five. By the age of 12, she enrolled in a dedicated dance school run by the noted Chinese Bharatanatyam exponent Jin Shan Shan. She underwent rigorous training for five years, practicing for five hours a day, to prepare for her Arangetram. Her debut performance was held at a packed auditorium in Beijing and was attended by India's Deputy Ambassador Abhishek Shukla and her guru Jin Shan Shan. Jin Shan Shan herself received training in Bharatanatyam at Chennai's renowned Kalakshetra Foundation and was a student of India's famous Bharatanatyam exponent Leila Samson. Zhang Jiayuan's achievement highlights the growing popularity of Indian classical dance among youngsters in China.
