About

Kalamandalam V. Sathyabhama (1937-2015) was a revered Indian classical dancer, teacher, and choreographer, widely recognized as a matriarch of Mohiniyattam, the graceful dance form from Kerala. Born on November 4, 1937, in Shornur, Palakkad, Kerala, she began her dance journey at a young age as a part-time student at Kerala Kalamandalam. Her initial training was in Bharatanatyam under Kalamandalam Achutha Warrier and Kalamandalam Krishnankutty Warrier. After completing her 8th standard, she joined Kalamandalam as a full-time student in 1950, where she dedicated herself to Mohiniyattam under the tutelage of Thottassery Chinnammu Amma. She also received training from Kalamandalam Kalyanikutty Amma and in Kathakali. Sathyabhama joined Kerala Kalamandalam as a teacher in 1957, embarking on a distinguished career that saw her rise to become the institution's first woman Vice Principal and later its Principal from 1992 until her retirement in 1993. She also served as the Dean of Kerala Kalamandalam and was part of the selection committee for annual fellowships. Though she performed early in her career, including a debut at Kalamandalam's silver jubilee in 1955 before Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, she retired from performances at the young age of 24 to focus on teaching and choreography, leaving a profound legacy in the development of Mohiniyattam. Her significant contributions include purifying Mohiniyattam by eliminating external influences and refining performance techniques to emphasize Lasyam. She revolutionized the Mohiniyattam curriculum at Kerala Kalamandalam, which led to the evolution of the distinctive "Kalamandalam style Mohiniyattam." Sathyabhama developed the training methodology and vocabulary used at Kalamandalam and created numerous compositions that are now integral to the standard Mohiniyattam repertoire. Her innovations incorporated elements from Bharatanatyam and Kathakali, such as the 'ulachil' (torso swaying) and 'chuzippus' (bustle of the torso) from Kathakali's female characters, and she altered the traditional sequence of adavus and abhinaya. She also contributed to the evolution of Mohiniyattam's costumes and jewelry and authored a Malayalam treatise titled "Mohiniyattam - History, Techniques and Performance." Kalamandalam V. Sathyabhama was honored with numerous prestigious awards, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1994, the Padma Shri in 2014, the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award in 1976, and its Fellowship in 2007. She was also the first recipient of the Nruthya Natya Puraskaram of the Government of Kerala in 2005 and the Swati Tirunal Puraskaram in 2006, among others like the Kerala Kalamandalam Award (1988) and the Shadkala Govinda Marar Award (2013). She passed away on September 13, 2015, in Ottapalam, Kerala.
