Shanmuga Sundaram is a leading bharatanatyam artiste and educator, based in Chennai, India. He has been disciplined in the classical dance art of bharatanatyam and nattuvangam by the legendary dance guru, the late K.J. Sarasa. Shanmuga has been performing bharatanatyam for the last 20 years. Besides a performer, Shanmuga is also a much sought-after teacher and choreographer, especially in the Vazhuvoor style of bharatanatyam. Shanmugam is currently under the mentorship of Guru, Padma Shri, Smt. Chithra Visweswaran. He has performed in major festivals in India and abroad. He is also an ‘A’ grade artiste of the Doordarshan, and has been conferred several awards and titles such as “Natya Selvam” by Dr. Kalingar, “Natya Tara” by Kamal Haasan, and “Narthaka Nipuna” by ABHAI and the “Purush Award” by Sutra dance theater, Malaysia. Besides collaborations in dance productions with artistes in India and abroad, Shanmuga Sundaram has produced several unique dance productions, performed to critical acclaim, such as, “Jesus” in 2015, and “Amour” a dance production based on the sculptures of Rodin, Camille Claudel, and Dante’s “Divine Comedy”, in 2006 (this production is currently being reprised for 2018 performance). Shanumuga Sundaran is the artistic director of the annual dance festival “Sarasa Natya Mala” a festival as a tribute to his guru, K.J.
