He received rigorous training in Bharatanatyam under Guru Chandrashekar Navada and further honed his skills in Kuchipudi with Guru Smt. Veena Murthy Vijay, Kathak with Guru Dr. Maya Rao, and Indian contemporary dance with Madhu Nataraj. His comprehensive artistic foundation also includes training in the Indian martial arts of Kalaripayattu and Thang-tha, as well as folk-ritual dance forms and Yakshagana. Academically, Surya N Rao holds a bachelor's degree in Choreography and has successfully qualified Vidhwath in Bharatanatyam. A graded artist of Doordarshan, India's national television channel, Surya N Rao has garnered significant appreciation from art critics and the media for his performances and choreographic works. He has presented over 1000 performances at major dance festivals across India and on prestigious international platforms in Europe, the Middle East, the United States of America, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. His deep knowledge of Natuvangam and Indian classical music further enriches his artistry. Beyond performing, he is dedicated to spreading awareness and appreciation for classical dance, often choreographing for educational institutions. He also contributes as an event manager and technical director, showcasing his holistic understanding of the performing arts. Surya N Rao, alongside his wife Prathama Prasad Rao, co-founded and runs the MAHAMAYA ARTS FOUNDATION in Bangalore, India, an institution dedicated to promoting various art forms. His contributions to the arts have been recognized with several accolades, including the NRITYA SHIROMANI AWARD at the Cuttack International Dance Festival, the NATIONAL EXCELENCE AWARD from the Government of Orissa at the SHANTI Festival Bhubaneswar, and the YUVA KALASHRESTA title from BCKA Bengaluru.
