This registered society that propagates India’s classical cultural hues, was formed as an off-shoot of years of nurturing the ‘Indische Tanzakademie’ run by me to teach Bharathanatyam and Kuchipudi — the two southern Indian classical dances that I am proficient in.My quest for reaching out to other classical forms such as Kathak, Manipuri, Odissi, Kathakali, Mohiniattam, Hindustani and Karnatak music, as also the lesser-known arts such as Kalriapattu, Theyyam, Yakshgana, etc.,to the discerning audience of the West, particularly the Germans, led me to lay foundation for the ‘ Varnam’. Apart from this, the objective of the ‘Varnam’ is to offer lecture-demonstrations and short duration/crash-courses by acclaimed artistes from India so that those interested in Germany as also other parts of West get a greater opportunity to learn different hues of Indian cultural heritage from top artistes of India, while the students stay in /around Germany.This is also to help such students to train enough in their chosen artforms so as to become solo performers. The ‘Varnam’ is committed to social responsibilities as well. The artistes blossoming at Varnam — and those training them — intend to perform at Old Age Homes, Orphanages, Homes for differently-abled children to enliven their lives and bring them moments of happiness.
