Ambu Panikkar was a highly esteemed Kathakali artist hailing from the Malabar region of India. His reputation as a master of this traditional Kerala dance-drama form was significant enough to attract prominent students. Most notably, he served as a guru to Rukmini Devi Arundale, a legendary figure who would later found the renowned Kalakshetra institution and play a crucial role in the revival and popularization of Bharatanatyam. This mentorship underscores Panikkar's profound knowledge and skill in Kathakali, as he was instrumental in shaping the artistic foundation of a personality who would go on to revolutionize and revive Indian art forms. Ambu Panikkar's life concluded in 1947, just before India achieved its independence. His artistic lineage was diligently preserved and propagated by his son, K.P. Kunhiraman. Following Ambu Panikkar's death, Rukmini Devi Arundale, recognizing the importance of continuing his artistic tradition, invited K.P. Kunhiraman to join Kalakshetra. There, Kunhiraman dedicated three decades of his life, initially as a student honing his craft, and later as a distinguished performing artist. He became celebrated for his iconic portrayals of various characters, including Ravana, Viswamitra, Dasaratha, Guhan, and Vali, within Kalakshetra's famous Ramayana series. K.P. Kunhiraman eventually moved to the United States, where he established his own dance school, "Kalanjali," in California, thereby ensuring the global reach and continuation of the dance heritage rooted in his father's teachings and the broader Kathakali tradition. Ambu Panikkar's legacy, though not marked by a personal academy or numerous documented awards, is powerfully reflected in the enduring impact he had on his illustrious student and the subsequent generations of dancers influenced by his son.
