Ananda Shivaram (1916-2001) was a globally renowned Indian classical dancer, primarily celebrated for his profound contributions to Kathakali. Born on April 16, 1916, to Guru Gopala Panicker and Pathiyazath Madahvi Amma, Shivaram commenced his gurukulam training in Kathakali at the tender age of ten under the tutelage of his father. In 1929, his exceptional talent caught the attention of the eminent poet Vallathol Narayana Menon and Manakkulam Mukunda Rajah, who facilitated his entry into the Kerala Kalamandalam, where he became a distinguished member of the first batch of the Kathakali section. A fully trained professional of the Northern School of Kathakali (vadakkan chitta), Shivaram pioneered a distinctive approach to the art form. He emphasized the body language (nritha aspect) of Kathakali, believing it should be exposed to a wider audience rather than solely focusing on elaborate facial work and costumes, thereby making the intricate art more accessible. His illustrious international career commenced in 1947 when he departed Kalamandalam alongside the Australian impresario Louise Lightfoot. This collaboration led to a groundbreaking tour of Australia from 1947 to 1949, marking Shivaram as the first Indian stage artist to perform in the country. His London debut in 1949 was widely acclaimed as a sensation. Over five decades, Shivaram toured extensively with his wife and co-danseuse, Janakidevi, performing across Canada (in the 1950s and '70s), the USA, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Tasmania, Fiji, and Japan. He also graced the stage with the Melbourne National Ballet in Australia. Beyond his performances, Shivaram was a highly regarded educator, serving as a high-rated teacher at San Francisco University. In 1960, he established the "See India Foundation" in Cochin, with a branch in his native village of Ezhikkara, near Cochin. This institution was dedicated to promoting Indian culture, offering lecture-demonstrations and Kathakali performances to tourists. His lifelong devotion and contributions to Kathakali were recognized with a doctorate and the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy Fellowship. Ananda Shivaram passed away in 2001 at the age of 86.
