Born on January 1, 1956, in Nityananda Leirak, Imphal, Shrimati Nongthombam Amusana Devi is a highly acclaimed figure in Manipuri classical dance, renowned for her extensive contributions as a dancer, choreographer, and teacher. She received her foundational training and a Diploma in dance from the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA), Imphal. Her specialization in Manipuri Ras was meticulously honed under the tutelage of eminent gurus such as M. Amubi Singh, Th. Tarunkumar Singh, Th. Babu Singh, and Th. Suryamukhi Devi, establishing a strong classical foundation for her illustrious career. With a career spanning over four decades, Amusana Devi has garnered critical acclaim as a dancer, performing extensively both within India and internationally. She has graced stages across the UK, China, Japan, France, Myanmar, North and South Korea, South Africa, New Zealand, and Germany, often as part of the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy's touring groups and also as a solo artist at various prestigious dance festivals. Her performances are celebrated for their adherence to traditional Manipuri aesthetics and expressive depth. Her significant contributions extend to choreography, where she has created numerous impactful dance-dramas, including "Bidai Abhishap" for the Production Unit of JNMDA, which have been presented in several dance festivals. She has also played pivotal roles in approximately forty dance-dramas produced by JNMDA, such as "Keibul Lamjao," "Wainu Paren," and "Meghdoot," showcasing her versatility and profound understanding of the art form. Recognized for her profound dedication and artistry, Shrimati Nongthombam Amusana Devi was honored with the Manipur State Kala Akademi Award in 2008. Further solidifying her status as a leading exponent and guru of Manipuri dance, she received the esteemed Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2014 for her outstanding contributions to the art form, which is the highest Indian recognition in performing arts. Currently, she continues to contribute significantly to the legacy of Manipuri dance by serving as a Senior Production Assistant in the Production Unit of the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal. In this role, she actively trains young dancers, passing on her rich knowledge, intricate techniques, and profound expertise to the next generation of Manipuri dancers, ensuring the continuity and evolution of this classical tradition.
