Antonia Minnecola is a leading exponent of Kathak, the dynamic classical dance style of North India. Of Italian-American descent, she embarked on her Kathak journey as a disciple of the late, legendary Sitara Devi, widely regarded as one of the greatest female Kathak dancers of her era. Minnecola commenced her intensive training under Sitara Devi in 1974, supported by two fellowships from the American Institute of Indian Studies. She continued to study with her Guruji for nearly three decades, immersing herself in the traditional guru-shishya-parampara learning system. Beyond her primary tutelage, Minnecola also broadened her classical Indian arts education by studying under the renowned Ustad Ali Akbar and her father-in-law, the revered tabla maestro Ustad Allah Rakha Khan. Throughout her distinguished career, Minnecola has graced numerous prestigious stages and festivals worldwide as a solo Kathak artist. Her performances have been featured at events such as Jacob's Pillow, the San Francisco Jazz Festival, Stanford Lively Arts, Cal Performances, and the Montreal Jazz Festival, among many others across the globe. She frequently collaborated with her husband, the late tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, often appearing with him and his biennial touring ensemble, Masters of Percussion. Minnecola is also recognized for her innovative approach, employing Kathak to present contemporary works and collaborating with artists from diverse genres. Dedicated to passing on the rich traditions of Kathak, Minnecola has contributed significantly to dance education. She assisted Zakir Hussain during his guest professorships at esteemed institutions like Princeton University and Stanford University, and in his residencies at Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute. Furthermore, she has conducted numerous workshops and classes at various academic institutions, including UC Berkeley, Swarthmore University, and for Lines Ballet's BFA Program in Dance at Dominican University. Her contributions to choreography have been acknowledged with the Marin Arts Council Individual Artist Grant for Choreography, which she received twice.
