Acharya Pandit Sukhdev Maharaj, a Vaishnav Brahmin born in August 1888 in Kathmandu, Nepal, was a pivotal figure in the evolution of Kathak dance, particularly in establishing the Banaras Gharana. He was a singer, Sanskrit scholar, and professor of Hindu literature, and his father, Ramdas Mishra ji, was an expert vocalist and sarangi player. After 18 years of rigorous training in vocal music, Sukhdev Maharaj was appointed as the Rajgayak (court singer) at the royal court of Nepal, where he first encountered the glory of Kathak through the performance of Guru Bindadin Maharaj. Inspired by this experience and encouraged by Rabindranath Tagore in the 1920s, he pioneered a revival of Kathak, aiming to shift its focus from mere entertainment to a spiritually enriched art form. He reintroduced themes from the Natyashastra, symbolic iconography, and Hindu mythology, creating descriptive dance pieces by combining his vast knowledge of ancient mythologies and shlokas with his musical talent. He is particularly known for composing dynamic Tandav items, including Shiv-Tandav, Kali Vandana, and Durga Vandana. Defying significant social criticism and ostracism in Varanasi for his decision to initiate his children into Kathak, he moved to Calcutta (Kolkata) and established a dancing school, where he also admitted daughters of local courtesans, battling societal norms to popularize Kathak as a respected classical tradition. He ensured his children received further training from the great gurus of the Lucknow Gharana, including Acchan Maharaj, Lacchu Maharaj, and Shambhu Maharaj. Sukhdev Maharaj passed away in 1946.
