Aparna Shanmugam is a Bharatanatyam dancer who marked a significant milestone in her artistic journey by completing her arangetram, or debut performance, on July 10, 2021. This traditional solo recital, signifying a dancer's readiness to perform independently, was held at Andover High School. Aparna received her training in Bharatanatyam under the tutelage of Guru Smt. Sujatha Meyyappan, the esteemed artistic director of the Kolam Academy of Dance. She commenced her dance education at the tender age of six, diligently studying at the Kolam Academy of Dance, where she cultivated a profound passion, energy, and dedication for this classical Indian art form. During her arangetram, Aparna Shanmugam captivated the audience with her intricate footwork and expressive abhinaya (facial expressions), which were highlighted as key aspects of her performance. Her repertoire included a vibrant folk dance where she skillfully embodied both the characters of Yashoda and Krishna. The performance culminated with a dynamic Thillana, set in Madhuvanthi ragam and Adi Talam, which showcased her quick feet and sharp poses, followed by a graceful Thirupugazh Mangalam. Her guru, Smt. Sujatha Meyyappan, commended Aparna's adaptability and quick learning abilities, noting that she successfully mastered new pieces even after initial preparations for her arangetram. Aparna is a recent graduate of Andover High School and intends to further her academic pursuits in Bio Engineering at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. Her arangetram is considered the beginning of her ongoing dance education and future accomplishments.
