Athena Nair is an emerging Indian classical dancer specializing in the Kathak form. Her extensive training spans nearly 15 years, during which she has received guidance from prominent Kathak artist Farah Yasmeen Shaikh. Nair's lineage of learning also connects her to the esteemed late Pandit Chitresh Das, Farah Yasmeen Shaikh's own guru, highlighting a strong foundation in the traditional Kathak style. A significant milestone in her career was her first solo Kathak performance in 2019, which was presented as part of "Manzil ke Andaaz" by Noorani Dance. Further demonstrating her commitment to the art form, Nair was selected to participate in the Alliance for California Traditional Arts (ACTA) Apprenticeship Program in 2021, where she continued her intensive training as an apprentice under the mentorship of Farah Yasmeen Shaikh. Beyond her dedication to classical dance, Nair is recognized for her engagement with arts and activism. During her time as a psychology major at Tufts University, she actively explored the intersections of performance and social commentary. She has notably integrated her "Bollywood expertise and knowledge and South Asian classical dance expertise and knowledge" into her creative projects, including developing a "decolonizing and drag vision" for a professional production of "Chicago." Her intellectual contributions also include a TEDxTufts talk delivered in 2020, where she addressed critical issues surrounding fatphobia and body positivity. Through her performances and academic pursuits, Athena Nair demonstrates a multifaceted approach to art, blending traditional dance with contemporary social discourse.
