🪔 About

Nrityacharya Prahlad Das was a highly respected figure in the realm of Indian classical dance, particularly Kathak, leaving a significant legacy as a guru and institution builder in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India. His comprehensive training encompassed the rich traditions of Kathak, having been a direct disciple of the legendary Kathak dancer and choreographer, Shambhu Maharaj. Furthermore, he also received guidance from Pandit Ram Narayan Misra and played a pivotal role in disseminating the teachings of Lachhu Maharaj in eastern India, blending the elegance of the Lucknow Gharana with the dynamics of the Jaipur Gharana to train subsequent generations. Together with Srimati Nilima Das, Prahlad Das co-founded and directed Nritya Bharati in Calcutta, an institution that became recognized as an "Indian performing arts epicenter". Through Nritya Bharati, he dedicated himself to nurturing and promoting Indian classical dance, establishing a strong foundation for Kathak in the region. His profound teaching legacy is evident through his distinguished students. He served as the first dance teacher to Padmabhushan Kumudini Lakhia, a celebrated pioneer in contemporary Kathak dance. His son, Pandit Chitresh Das, who later achieved international acclaim as a Kathak performer and the visionary founder of the Chitresh Das Dance Company and Chhandam School of Kathak in both the United States and India, was deeply inspired by his parents' dedicated work at Nritya Bharati. Prahlad Das's contributions were instrumental in shaping the artistic journeys of many and ensuring the continuity and evolution of Kathak.
