Bhagavathula Sowmya is a distinguished Indian classical dancer specializing in Kuchipudi, hailing from a revered lineage of Kuchipudi gurus in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India. Born into a traditional classical dance family, her father is the renowned Natyacharya Sri Bhagavathula Venkatarama Sarma, and her grandfather is Bhagavatula Yegna Narayana Sarma, both celebrated Kuchipudi teachers and composers of dance ballets. Her mother is Smt. Srivalli. Sowmya began her dance training under her father at a very young age, commencing stage performances at the age of five. [1, 4, 5] She holds master's degrees in both Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam, as well as in English language, and a Bachelor of Business Management. [1, 4, 5] Sowmya was a recipient of a Central Government Scholarship for a period of 12 years. [1, 5] Throughout her extensive career, she has delivered over 7500 performances, both solo and in ballets, across India and internationally, including in the United States and Dubai. [1, 5] Her repertoire includes mythological roles such as Krishna, Vivekananda, and Mahishasura Mardhini, and she has also participated in social awareness dance ballets. [1] Beyond performing, Sowmya is a dedicated teacher and choreographer. She imparts Kuchipudi training at Ghantasala Music College and assists her father in his various dance schools. [4] She has also trained numerous students in the United States, specifically in Virginia, Connecticut, San Francisco, and California. [1, 5] She utilizes virtual platforms like Zoom and Skype to reach students globally, ensuring the continuation of the guru-shishya parampara.
