🪔 About

Guru Bichitrananda Swain is a highly acclaimed Indian classical Odissi dance figure, renowned as one of today's leading gurus and choreographers. His journey into Odissi began at an early age, driven by passion despite significant personal hardships. He enrolled in Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya in Bhubaneswar, initially without his family's knowledge. Following his mother's passing at age nine and his father's death during his fourth year of study, he faced immense financial struggles, often going without food and lacking proper dance costumes. Despite these challenges, he had the opportunity to train under several stalwarts of Odissi dance. He considers Guru Gangadhar Pradhan as his first guru and was also mentored by Padma Shri Sanjukta Panigrahi and Padma Vibhushan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra at the Odissi Research Centre. His teachers at Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya included Guru Pankaj Charan Das and Guru Debaprasad Das, and he also received guidance from Padma Shri Guru Aruna Mohanty at Orissa Dance Academy. Swain completed his M.Mus degree. He is widely credited with pioneering the 'purushang' or male form in Odissi choreographies, thereby redefining the role and space for male dancers within the classical tradition. He has created numerous productions specifically designed for male dancers, highlighting their strength, vigor, and expressive potential. From 1988 to 2002, he served as Principal and Chief Instructor at the internationally acclaimed Orissa Dance Academy. In 2000, Guru Bichitrananda Swain founded the Rudrakshya Foundation in Bhubaneswar, an institution that has since become a prominent training center for aspiring dancers. The foundation operates on a gurukul-like model, emphasizing a holistic approach that combines discipline, creativity, and aesthetic appreciation. He is known for mentoring many celebrated Odissi soloists and provides free education, food, and accommodation to talented students who face financial constraints. Under his leadership, he and his disciples have performed and conducted workshops extensively across India and internationally, captivating audiences in countries such as South Africa, the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, China, and South Korea.
