Chockalingam Pillai (1893–1968) was a highly renowned figure in Indian classical dance, specifically Bharatanatyam, and a pivotal doyen of the Pandanallur style. He was the son-in-law of the revered Guru Meenakshisundaram Pillai, who is often hailed as the 'Father of Bharatanatyam' and is credited with establishing the Pandanallur style. Chockalingam Pillai inherited and continued this rich lineage, which traced its roots back to the illustrious Tanjore Quartet, court musicians under Maratha ruler Serfoji II in the early 19th century. After Meenakshisundaram Pillai's passing, Chockalingam Pillai became the leading guru of the Pandanallur style. His teaching career was extensive, and he is credited with grooming many leading Bharatanatyam dancers of his era. He moved to Madras (now Chennai) to teach, further propagating the Pandanallur style throughout the region. From 1943, he served as the Honorary Principal of the Indian Institute of Fine Arts in Madras, where he continued to teach Bharatanatyam. The Pandanallur style, as maintained by Chockalingam Pillai, is known for its emphasis on linear geometry, purity of lines in dance movements, and classical stylization of abhinaya. His son, P.C. Subbaraya Pillai, also became a leading guru of the Pandanallur style, continuing the family's legacy. Chockalingam Pillai's contributions were instrumental in shaping the careers of numerous prominent dancers and preserving the integrity of the Pandanallur tradition.
