Tanjore Gnyana (1857-1922) was a celebrated courtesan (devadasi) dancer of Bharatanatyam, renowned for her exceptional abhinaya and enthralling performances in 19th-century South India. Born in Tiruvarur in 1857, she was the granddaughter of the prominent nattuvanar Ayyaswamy, who initiated her into basic adavus at the age of three. She furthered her training in Sadir under Thiruvarur Ayyaswamy nattuvan and Thiruvarur Periyasamy nattuvan. Her maiden performance, or arangetram, took place at the Thyagaraja temple in 1864/65 when she was seven years old. Gnyana later received instruction from Tanjore Mahadevan, the son of Sivanandam, one of the esteemed Tanjore Quartet. Her association with the Tanjore area and her performances there led to her being known by the honorific 'Tanjore' Gnyana. She also learned Bhagavat Mela swarajathis from Sulamangalam Sitharama Bhagavatar. A pivotal moment in her career was her performance for Prince Edward of Wales at the Royapuram Station in Madras on December 17, 1875, an event that significantly boosted her fame. Her artistry extended beyond India, as she performed in Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) at multiple venues around 1876-1877. She captivated audiences, including the Maharaja of Mysore, who honored her with a 'kanakabhishekam' (shower of golden coins). Gnyana's career reflected the evolving landscape of Indian dance, transitioning from traditional temple and durbar settings to public stages influenced by colonial modernity. She was instrumental in popularizing compositions like the Tanjore Quartet's swarajathi “Ee Mandayanara”. Among her notable students was the nattuvanar Kattumannarkoil Muthukumaran (1874-1960).
