Daquil Miriyala is an Odissi dancer deeply associated with the internationally acclaimed Nrityagram Dance Village, an intentional community and India's first modern gurukul for Indian classical dances, situated outside Bangalore, India. Her formal training in Odissi commenced in 2010 when she joined Nrityagram's Village Outreach Programme. Displaying considerable promise and commitment, she transitioned to become a residential student at the gurukul in 2011. Here, she underwent intensive training in the Odissi classical dance form, a tradition rooted in Hindu devotional practices and rich in literary and musical heritage. Miriyala received her comprehensive instruction under the direct tutelage of two highly respected gurus within the Nrityagram lineage: Surupa Sen, the Artistic Director and choreographer, and Pavithra Reddy, a senior dancer and primary teacher at Nrityagram. This rigorous training environment, characteristic of the ancient Guru-shishya tradition followed at Nrityagram, involves up to eight hours of practice daily, six days a week, for several years. In 2021, a significant milestone in her career, Daquil Miriyala was selected to join the prestigious Nrityagram Dance Ensemble. As a member of this world-renowned ensemble, she has performed on prominent stages, notably participating in “Āhuti,” a collaborative production with the Sri Lankan company Chitrasena. Her involvement with the Nrityagram Dance Ensemble underscores her emergence as a dedicated and skilled performer, contributing to the ensemble's mission of bringing Odissi, one of the oldest dance traditions globally, to audiences worldwide. Her journey reflects the profound impact of Nrityagram's unique approach to classical dance education and performance.
