🪔 About

Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, born on January 8, 1926, in Raghurajpur, Puri, Odisha, India, was a legendary Indian classical dancer, guru, and exponent credited with the 20th-century revival and popularization of Odissi dance. His early life was steeped in art; he performed Gotipua, a traditional dance form where young boys impersonate women to honor Lord Jagannath, and was skilled in Pattachitra painting. He also mastered percussion instruments like the Mardala and Tabla, training under gurus such as Balabhadra Sahu, Mohan Sunder Goswami, Agadhu Moharana, Kshetramohan Kar, and Harihar Rao. His journey included a decade with Mohan Goswami's Rasa party, where he learned acting, mime, singing, make-up, stage setting, and choreography. He later joined Annapurna 'B' theatre in Cuttack, distinguishing himself as a dancer, percussionist, and choreographer. In 1953, Mohapatra began teaching Odissi at Kala Vikas Kendra in Cuttack, a pivotal institution that first included Odissi in its curriculum. For fifteen years, he dedicated himself to teaching and researching the Mahari and Gotipua traditions, drawing inspiration from ancient texts and temple sculptures to restructure and expand the Odissi repertoire. He is credited with creating over two hundred solo compositions and about fifty dance ballets. In 1993, along with his wife Laxmipriya Mohapatra and son Ratikant Mohapatra, he founded Srjan (Srjan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Odissi Nrityabasa) in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, an institution dedicated to imparting training and preserving the Odissi dance form. He passed away on April 7, 2004, in Bhubaneswar, leaving behind a profound legacy that continues through his academy and numerous disciples worldwide. Awards & Honours: Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1966), Padma Shri (1974), Doctorate by Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal (1981), Padma Bhushan (1988), Kalidas Samman (1989), Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship (1991), Srimanta Sankardeva Award (1997), Padma Vibhushan (2000), Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja Samman (2000).
