Debamitra Sengupta is an internationally acclaimed Odissi exponent, performer, choreographer, and teacher, whose career spans over three decades. She received her training under the tutelage of eminent gurus such as Padmabibhushan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, Padmashree Smt. Sanjukta Panigrahi, and Smt. Sutapa Talukdar, who initiated her into Odissi. Sengupta is recognized for her nimble footwork, sculpturesque movements, and mesmerizing abhinaya, which transports audiences to the world of Radha-Krishna or Chandi. She is the founder-director of the Kolkata Mayur Lalit Dance Academy, established on November 1, 2004, where she imparts lessons in Odissi and contemporary styles to a large number of students, including underprivileged ones. A branch of her academy has been successfully running in Alipurduar, North Bengal, since March 2007. Sengupta began teaching Odissi at the age of 20 at Gurukul, a premier classical dance school in Kolkata, where she groomed students for over a decade. She is known for her innovative teaching approach, encouraging students to explore creative skills and providing lessons in Natyashastra, classical music, and Pakhawaj, alongside yoga for physical fitness. As a performer, Debamitra Sengupta has presented Odissi recitals in numerous prestigious programs across India and internationally, including North America (San Francisco, Atlanta, Boston, New York, Washington D.C., Seattle), Canada (Ottawa, Montreal, Calgary, Saskatoon, Swift Current, Regina, Winnipeg), Myanmar, and Bangladesh. She is also a prolific choreographer, with significant productions such as the Odissi Dance Ballet 'Raas Lila' based on Padabali Kirtan, the Rabindrik Dance Drama 'Chitrangada', and the solo Odissi Dance Drama 'Meghnad Badh'. Sengupta is a 'TOP Grade' Doordarshan Artist and an empanelled artist under the ICCR, Ministry of External Affairs, and Ministry of Culture, Government of India. She is also involved in social activities, serving as a Dance Teacher and Counsellor at the Alipore Correctional Home for Women & Children in Kolkata.
