Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam, born on February 4, 1943, in Madras (now Chennai), India, is a preeminent figure in Indian classical dance, particularly Bharatanatyam. Her artistic journey began at a young age, learning Bharatanatyam from Kausalya at Nrityodaya, the dance school founded by her father, K. Subrahmanyam, a renowned filmmaker and freedom fighter. She later trained under the esteemed Guru Vazhuvoor Ramaiah Pillai and had her arangetram (debut performance) in 1956. Beyond her captivating performances, Dr. Subrahmanyam is a distinguished research scholar, choreographer, music composer, singer, teacher, author, and Indologist. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Music, a Master's in Ethnomusicology, and a Ph.D. in dance from Annamalai University. Her doctoral thesis, "Karanas in Indian dance and sculpture," was groundbreaking, emphasizing that the 108 Karanas (basic units of Indian dance) are dynamic movements rather than static poses. She has been instrumental in reviving obsolete dance techniques by translating theoretical concepts from the Natya Sastra into practice and is known for developing the dance form Bharata Nrithyam. Dr. Subrahmanyam has directed Nrityodaya, the institution founded by her father, since her teenage years, where she has developed a new pedagogy for body training based on the Natya Sastra. She has trained numerous dancers, teachers, and musicians, offering a holistic view of dance art. Her contributions to Asian art and culture have earned her widespread international recognition.
